“For myself, as well as for many others, no one has been more of an inspiration than Elton John. When I first heard Bennie And The Jets, I knew at that time I had to be a performer.”

Academy Award
In 1991, Tim Rice was signed by Disney to write the lyrics for The Lion King, and they asked him who he would recommend to write the music. Having known each other for years and worked together previously on the Jump Up! album, Elton was his first choice.
“This project was exciting and challenging because I had to write differently from what I would write for myself. I think that The Lion King is the funniest movie Disney has made since Jungle Book. In fact, I probably think it’s the funniest movie they’ve ever made.” – Elton.
“I’d like to dedicate this award to my grandmother, Ivy Sewell. She died last week, and she was the one who sat me down at the piano when I was three and made me play. ”
The film came out to critical acclaim – it is regarded by Empire as one of the greatest films ever made – and at the 67th Annual Academy Awards in 1995, three of Elton and Tim Rice’s compositions from The Lion King were nominated for Best Song: Hakuna Matata, Circle of Life and Can You Feel The Love Tonight.

Elton John’s tribute to Princess Diana
“Candle in the Wind 1997”, Elton and Bernie’s heartfelt tribute to the late Diana, Princess of Wales, has sold over 33,000,000 copies, and raised millions for the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund. It is the highest selling single since charts began.
“I thought it was very important to project it from a nation's standpoint. I wanted to make it sound like a country, as opposed to being sung by Elton. He was sort of a voice for a nation.”
On February 24, 1998, Elton John became Sir Elton John, CBE when he was knighted by the Queen at Buckingham Palace for services to British pop music and his work in raising money for AIDS charities.
“I've had a long career and worked hard but I think the turning point came in 1990 when I got sober and started to do some charity work, particularly for the AIDS problem. A knighthood is the icing on the cake.”
